Rangipo is the final stage of the Tongariro Power Project. Mr Burt Decker, Project Engineer with the Ministry of Works explains the diversion of the headwaters of the Whanganui and Moawhango Rivers [into Lake Rotorua] through to the Tokaanu Power Station into Lake Taupo.
The Rangipo Power Station will divert waters from Tongariro supplemented by water from the Moawhango Tunnel back into the underground Power Station then back into the Tongariro River.
Rangipo is the second underground station built in New Zealand. The first at Manapouri was constructed by overseas contractors and consultants.
Rangipo is designed by Wellington’s Ministry of Works and will be constructed by New Zealand contractors.
Most of the Rangipo scheme construction is underground and was started in 1973 to be completed in the late 1980s.
