AIRWAYS... SOLENT IN SERVICE: A new Solent flying boat, the Aorangi, takes off from Wellington Harbour for a demonstration flight across Cook Strait. The 2,000 horse power engine allows the plane to fly at 200 knots.

SPRING... TULIP TIME: In parks and gardens all over New Zealand, tulips are in bloom. Australasia’s biggest tulip farm is in South Canterbury. Last year 200,000 bulbs were exported from this 12 acre farm.

WANGANUI... MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX: The 74 mile, 20 lap race is won by G Herd.

INDUSTRY... NYLONS: Luckily for “the thousands of nylon conscious women of New Zealand”, there is an Auckland nylon factory which has 144 knitting machines. Women work in production lines turning out a thousand pairs a day. Each operator oversees 16 machines. One woman can “knit the toes” for 54 dozen pairs of nylons in one day, and seam 36 dozen pairs in a day. The next stage is dyeing; the nylons are pulled over dummies and then dried and steam treated. Lab tests ensure strength and quality.
