022:20 ON THE ROAD TO ROTORUA: Royal Tour Special: On day 10, the Royal couple are escorted by Dr HC Todd, the Mayor of Cambridge, to a luncheon at the town hall. They then travel to visit the Karapiro Dam where Mr AE Davenport, General Manager of the Hydro-Electric Department explains the operation of the dam. An estimated 10,000 people converge on Tirau Domain to welcome the Royal couple.
At Rotorua there is a rousing welcome from over 60,000 people. At Arawa Park there is a wero, by the chief of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa tribe. The honour of retrieving the wero goes to Mr JH Grace, a chief of the tribe. This is followed by a wero from Anania Te Amohau, the Arawa chief who wrote the ‘Maori Battalion Marching Song.’ A pōwhiri, includes a haka from Ngāti Tūwharetoa, followed by the women of Ngāti Porou who perform the haka of welcome ‘Ka Panapana.’
The Bishop of Aotearoa presents korowai to both Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.
During an unofficial three day break, the Royal Couple tour Whakarewarewa with Guide Rangi. At Moose Lodge on the shores of Lake Rotoiti, they spend time relaxing with a small group of guests. On leaving Rotorua, the Queen meets 107 year old Mrs Ellen Muriwai of Whitianga, who was born 9 years after the Queen’s great-great grandmother ascended the throne.
