WELLINGTON - ICEBREAKER IN FLOATING DOCK: Safe in dock after a 20 day hazardous voyage from the Ross Sea is the US Icebreaker, Eastwind. She lost her port propeller after carving a passage through McMurdoch Sound in ice up to 17 feet thick. After repairs are completed, harbour master Captain Todd guides her out from the wharf into the harbour, in preparation for the 6,000 mile journey ahead.

LORD RUTHERFORD’S OLD SCHOOL - NELSON COLLEGE CENTENNIAL: A parade of school masters from the oldest secondary state school and the principal for 23 years HB Sterl? The 980 students take part in some way or another during the five day Centennial Celebration activities. Guest speakers include: the President of the Old Boys Association, LR Palmer and Chief Justice, H Baraclough KCMG. At Lord Rutherford’s birthplace memorial is Dr Ernest Marsden of New Zealand and Sir Charles Gorton Darling? The unveiling of the Nelson College Memorial for the dead of World Wars One and Two, and the opening of the assembly hall by the Minister of Education.

CHRISTCHURCH - MODEL YACHTS ON VICTORIA LAKE: The Christchurch Model Yacht Club enthusiasts sail their yachts in Victoria Lake, Hagley Park. Founded in 1898, the club’s racing yachts are built to specific detail, races occur regularly and there is an annual competition for prizes.

SOUTHLAND CELEBRATIONS - PARADE IN INVERCARGILL: Members of Cabinet arrive in Invercargill for a meeting of the Executive Council. They watch the Southland 100 year parade and celebrations. Sir Willoughby and Lady Norrie wave from the balcony as floats pass by. With over 50 floats, the crowds of spectators line the streets to view the event.
