BUNGAY ON CRIME is a series which examines unusual murder cases in New Zealand.

THE MAINSTREET MURDER: At 3.30 am on Sunday 1 July 1979, Margaret Bell, a 17 year old waitress at Auckland’s Mainstreet cabaret was shot while waiting for a taxi after work. Two weeks later Brian McDonald was arrested and served nine years for her murder. The evidence that convicted McDonald came from Bruce Speck and Gary O’Connor who the trial judge described as equally guilty with McDonald.

Includes a reconstruction of the three men’s different version of events. Also includes interviews with Det. Insp. Ian Hastings; Det. Superintendent Bryan Rowe; prosecutor Dave Morris; defence counsel Barry Hart.
