There are calls for an overnight homeless shelter in Tāmaki Makaurau following alleged sexual assaults of homeless people. Life on the streets is becoming increasingly dangerous for rough sleepers and the homeless with increased assaults and violence and now a series of alleged sexual assaults. Those working with the homeless are also concerned that winter will lead to increased health problems and deaths. Marama Davidson has experienced her first day as co-leader of the Green Party and says she wishes to increase the party’s share of the vote by differentiating it from the Labour Party. This follows the party gifting their questions in Parliament to the National Party, a move which perplexed and angered their supporters. The National Party have signalled they wish to enhance their environmental credentials, but the Green Party are wary of their commitment and ability to deliver on any promises. Netsafe is advising New Zealanders to change their privacy setting on Facebook after revelations of a date breach by Cambridge Analytica. The Privacy Commission has also stated that they lack the power to address people’s concerns about the security of their personal information. Rotorua is set to become the first bilingual city in Aotearoa with bilingual signage welcoming people. The New Zealand Transport Agency and the Rotorua Lakes Council have reached an agreement on new signs reading “Haere Mai Ki Rotorua” and regulations around other road signs are currently being examined. A former smoker has created a vaping app called “Qwit” designed to help smokers quit the habit. The behavioural modification app was created by health professionals to help people reduce their consumption of cigarettes. The Cook Islands have just made history by winning their first ever Commonwealth Games medal for Lawn Bowls in the men’s pairs.
