Roughly 60 protesters supporting charter schools have demonstrated outside Jacinda Ardern’s electorate office in Tāmaki Makaurau. A petition calling on the Government to retain charter schools under the current legislation has attracted 3,000 signatures and David Seymour is saying that he won’t let this issue be ignored. The wait for a new school campus in Manurewa continues as officials from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Manurewa and Te Wharekura o Manurewa urge the Government to start building immediately. Although the site is ready and the Government has approved funding, the organisations say they are facing obstacles within the Ministry of Education. Tema Hēmi reports: Rangi McLean, Ngāi Tūhoe. Nanaia Mahuta has welcomed a draft report from the Productivity Commission on the way for Aotearoa to transition to a low emission economy. The report states that Māori land and marae on the coast are at risk from sea level rise and storms surges and that Māori have Treaty of Waitangi interests in protecting lands and waterways.

The Mayor of Palmerston North City, Grant Smith, is standing by his decision to add Māori wards to his council saying it is better to have Māori at the table. The Council had agreed to include Māori wards in the 2019 local body elections, but a petition has triggered a citizens initiated referendum on the issue and the decision will be binding for the council. The Mana Tangata programme from OMGTech! selects 30 students from disadvantaged communities and pairs them with technology industry mentors. Porirua children were a highlight of this year’s Anzac Day parade at Takapūwāhia Marae as crowds gathered to pay their respects to the 40 soldiers who left the Porirua community to fight overseas. New Zealand Waka Ama teams are currently preparing for the IVF Va’a World Championship in Tahiti. 11 teams from Ngā Hau Maiangi will be competing and all the paddlers are training for success. The SIAM Cup Junior Muay Thai competition is looking to expand in Aotearoa after its success in Australia. The tournament in New Zealand saw all 4 of the Australian champions taking a title which reflects the number of fighters in each country. Australia won the 2018 Open Trans-Tasman Series Final 5 – 4 today after scoring the winning goal in overtime.

The Jaguares defeated the Blues 20 – 13 in the Super Rugby tournament for their first ever win over a New Zealand team.

The Crusaders defeated the Brumbies 21 – 8 in Canberra.

The new Principal of Piripono kura kaupapa says that she is a product of kōhanga reo and kura ā-iwi and is looking forward to her new challenge. The Principal of her old kura praises her te reo and her embrace of Te Ao Māori.
