He Kākano aims to make organic gardening easy and relevant to today, weaving together traditional growing methods with Māori ingenuity, to produce fresh tasty dishes. Hosted by Jade Temepara. In this episode, Jade visits Tiki Taane in Pāpāmoa, in the Bay of Plenty, and helps Tiki build a maara kai. Ko te whāinga kia iti iho i te Rima rau taara. A no dig garden, both Tiki and his partner are vegetarian. They have solar power, drive an electric car and are living as green as possible. In 2016 jade opened He Kākano Café and Cookery School in Christchurch. Helen Leahy is an Mentor for Jade and speaks about how she got started. Step by Step, how to compost. By Ātahu Kohere- Soutar. and we visit Dr. Hinemoa Elder (Te Aupōuri, Ngāti Kurī Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi) and take a look in her backyard on Waiheke Island. Hinemoa has an extensive garden with fruit trees, raised gardens, herbs, honey, figs and black doris plums and cooking apples. Horonuku Colin Reihana (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) Jade’s Grandfather has helped teach her gardening and gave her some Peruperu seeds to grow, which are 4th Generation to her Poua.
