Unitec Institute of Technology's Dr Scott Wilson is interested in popular culture through the lenses of cinema theory, critical and cultural studies. In his presentation at the 2017 Composers Association of New Zealand Conference: ‘Composing on Shifting Ground’, he examines the characteristics of the one-hit wonder with particular reference to such New Zealand gems as Fred Dagg's 'Gumboot Song' and Suzanne "Natural Glow" Paul's 'Blue Monkey' (works we never thought we would mention in conjunction with the Resound project). His Venn diagram sorting of the intersections of three types of songs - the Novelty Song, the One-Hit Wonder and the Signature Tune - is particularly interesting.
The conference was held on the 29th and 30th of April at the University of Canterbury School of Music in Christchurch.
