Rail Car Blown Off Track in Fierce Gale at Wairarapa.

001:48
On 9 October 1936, a north-west gale struck the railcar Mamari travelling south between Featherston and Pigeon Bush. The railcar was blown off the rails just before reaching a section of the line sheltered by a large wooden windbreak. The force of the wind was estimated at 128 km (80 miles) an hour. When the railcar crashed over on to its side, the passengers were thrown out of their seats. One woman was hurled over the top of three seats in front of her. Seven of the eight people injured were women. The unexpected velocity of the wind was the cause of the accident.
