“James Belich presents a five-part documentary series about the armed conflicts between Maori and Pakeha in the last century.
(3) The Invasion of the Waikato: The Taranaki War of 1860-61 cost the imperial British government millions of dollars. But, with the sacking of Governor Gore Browne and the return of George Grey, the Queen’s soldiers invaded the Waikato in 1863 in an attempt to crush the King movement once and for all.” from the New Zealand Listener

THE NZ WARS

This show is currently off air.

THE NEW ZEALAND WARS uncovers the conflicts between Māori and Pakeha in the 19th century, when a small tribal group of people clashed with the world’s largest empire.
The struggle for British sovereignty over mana Māori is a story of racism and heroism, grief and triumph, flowering myths and stunted truths. These were the first overseas wars to which Australia committed troops.
For most New Zealanders and Australians, the story has not been told until now.

THE NEW ZEALAND WARS, this acclaimed five part television series, won both the Qantas Media Award for Best Documentary and the N Z Peace Foundation’s Media Peace Award. It was written and presented by Professor James Belich, New Zealand’s pre-eminent historian of the New Zealand wars.

Background
THE NEW ZEALAND WARS was three years in the making with meticulous care being given not only to the narrative but to the sourcing of the many historic images, including paintings, sketches and photographs. These were unearthed in New Zealand, Australia and Britain. Actual weapons and mementos from the wars were also filmed. Filming for each episode was conducted on all the major battlefields. This followed a period of thorough consultation with all relevant iwi. Kaumatua from all major iwi involved in the wars were interviewed for the series.
The series is also distinguished by the use of high-end animations of the spectacular and militarily effective and revolutionary Māori fortifications.
These were among the very first television projects produced by the internationally acclaimed, Dunedin based, Animation Research Limited which these days is famous for its work on, among other things, America's Cup yachting and played a major part in the post production of the recent MTS hit-series 'KAITANGATA TWITCH.'
