In June 1972 a Pouihi, carved by Inia Te Wiata, was unveiled at New Zealand House, London. This film follows the ten year period during which the carving was made.
The pouihi, made from a totara tree was carved in eight sections totalling 50 ft, retells the legends of Aotearoa from when Māui fished the islands from the sea.
Inia Te Wiata talks about the carving (unfortunately he died just before the unveiling and before the carving's completion) and what it represents.
Includes footage of New Zealand, the land and people and illustrates the legends Te Wiata carved into the Pouihi.
