TRACK LAYING: Welding machine at Woburn workshops, where rails are welded into lengths of 351ft, ready for prefabrication at Mangaroa into complete track units.

NZR...LOCOMOTIVE BUILDING:35 ‘J A’ type Locomotives under construction at the Dunedin workshops. One is assembled and completed every seven weeks at Hillside. Each weighs 109 ton and is the second heaviest engine used in New Zealand. 95% finished parts are made at the workshops.

RAILWAYS...CHANGING ENGINES: An 80 year old engine still in operation in the docks of Lyttelton. The change over to diesel-electric and electric locomotives will cut costs by a third.

FELL ENGINES AND THE RIMUTAKA INCLINE: After 77 years the Fell engine makes last trip over the Rimutaka incline, prior to the opening of the tunnel. A sign on the nose of the new diesel-electric locomotive reads,’Opening Ceremony 3 Nov 1955 Rimutaka Tunnel Excursion Train.’ The Featherston - Wellington trip will now take 60 minutes.
