Local Māori believe that after the unveiling of Kupe’s memorial, Kupe sent a taniwha in the form of a dolphin to befriend and unite the people.When Opo Died on March 9, 1956 the official story was that she had stranded on rocks as the tide went out. Many locals however, believe Opo’s death was the result of a fisherman’s irresponsible bombing.
