The green mussel is a traditional food of the Māori. At Pelorous Sounds, John Meredith Young is the inspector for Agriculture & Fisheries. He regularly visits Mussel Farms throughout the Sounds, to take samples for analysing. There are eight co-operative farms in the area.

016: 22 IKA TE KARAROA.
At Waikaramihi on the South Taranaki Coast, Dick Kingi of Ngāti Rua Ti and Ngāti Maika, has lead his people on the Hī Ika fishing trip for over 20 years. Ruka Broughton recites karakia for a safe journey, for the eight crew members going on the trip. The canoe is named ‘Karewaonui,’ carved to paddle. No fish were caught on this trip, but the traditions of their ancestors have been continued. The day ends with a hākari.
