NAENAE CO-OP SHOPS: The first co-op centre in a state housing area is open for business in the Hutt Valley. The butcher and the grocer are still the only fully completed shops but soon Naenae housewives will be able to enjoy a wide range of services. The construction was undertaken by the Rehabilitation Scheme and the shops are all staffed by returned men.

AUCKLAND FAREWELL TO ACHILLES: Achilles leaves for England where she will revert to the Royal Navy. The 500 men onboard are farewelled at Auckland harbour. They will return to New Zealand with the new cruiser Bellona.

OHAKEA...MR NASH RETURNS: Mr (Walter) Nash returns from a conference in London and is greeted by the Prime Minister Mr Peter Fraser.

EAST COAST DISTRICT NURSE: 100 miles north of Gisborne in Te Araroa, the district nurse visits the local people, of whom 90% are Māori. She must cross rivers and hostile countryside, often completing her journey on horseback. She endeavours to isolate tuberculosis by keeping patients in detached bedrooms. At the local school, she gives the children baths and organises nutritious packed lunches. She teaches young women mother craft and gives prenatal classes in her own home. “Everyone respects the district nurse. She is a lone figure - but too busy to be lonely.”

(The nurse featured in above story was Isabella Banks MBE, who is not named in the film. She died in Whanganui September 1990, aged 92)
