“NGĀTI NRL follows professional M ori and Pacific Island rugby league players in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL.).
Leading the brownwash of the NRL is Wests Tigers’ star Benji Marshall (Ngāi Tūhoe) whose progress is recorded and lauded throughout the 13-part half-hour series.
NGĀTI NRL is made for Māori Television by Auckland-based production company Butobase and follows a handful of Māori and Pacific Island hopefuls striving to progress from feeder clubs to the big time in Australasia’s premier league competition.
Throughout the 2005 season, 20-year-old Marshall went from ex-Whakatane teenage sensation to NRL hot property with his infamous step, audacious ball-handling skills and explosive speed. This season, Marshall is primed to take his game to the next level and NGĀTI NRL will capture on and off-field influences as he strives to achieve his goals.
The players in the series include Wests Tigers lock and second rower Bronson Harrison (Tainui), Balmain Tigers prop Sam Moa (Tongan) and hooker Rangi Chase (Ngāti Kahungunu), Canterbury Bulldogs hooker Billy Ng wini (Ngāti Tūwharetoa), North Sydney Bears newcomers Mark Adams (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāpuhi) and Darrin Campbell (Ngati Tuwharetoa, Te Whānau-a-Apanui) and Turangi brothers Ben and Casey Ellis (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Tūwharetoa).” www.maoritelevision.com, 06/06/2006
