Newsline was a short lived midday news broadcast which featured live interviews and a talkback segment. It was presented by Rodney Bryant, John Hayden, John Hawkesby and others.
This recording starts abruptly after the introduction.
Soviet television have interviewed one of the firefighters who worked to contain the fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Leonid Telyatnikov has lost a lot of hair but is expected to make a full recovery. Soviet doctors say they have treated more than 18,000 patients, most of them for stress related problems.
The new Soviet policy of glasnost has seen the state introducing marriage and christening rituals which provide an alternative to the Eastern Orthodox church. However, what is referred to as the Old Religion continues with many worshippers in Georgia and other Soviet satellite states.

An enormous fire has destroyed a newsprint warehouse in London which was part of the Murdoch press empire, News International. Witnesses way they saw men throwing firebombs into the building and police suspect this act of arson is linked to the strike action being taken in Wapping. Management of News International have not hesitated in blaming the unions, but the unions have said they are not responsible and the allegations are disgraceful. ABC has just broadcast new images from inside Mission Control at Houston during the launch and explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger. The communications logs and images show the cool professionalism of the engineers and flight directors during the accident followed by the acceptance of the scale of the tragedy. James Walker reports.
