A teacher at Napier Street school in Freemans Bay takes a class on the city of Auckland, posing the question as to why people live in certain parts of the city. The film looks at Auckland’s industry through the eyes of the school children as they embark on projects to find out more about their city. Students look at the work of: dress makers, a roof tiling factory, the manufacture of fibre suitcases, cosmetics (”Every girl dreams of the day when she will be getting ready for her first dance.... and a future of loveliness stretching ahead...”), drain laying and production, lingerie machining, fabric manufacturing, rayon cloth, work of the Kiwi Bacon Company, shoe manufacturing and design, mattress manufacturing, ice cream production, the production of the film itself (filming, editing, voice synch etc), radio manufacturing and bread baking. Each of these industries is shown and explained. The children return with their projects.
