External relations Minister Mike Moore has made an impassioned plea to the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation Conference in Canberra to do its bit in freeing up world trade. Moore told the meeting it had to come up with enough with more than another committee and says ministers must go home and convince their Governments to make progress on freer trade. The East German Government has liberalised travel laws, while many Poles are moving to East Germany. Two reports.

The dream of owning your own business is, for many, becoming a nightmare. The self-employed are being swamped with paper work, paper work the Government requires along with a host of tax payments. Although the Government backed down on demands business file PAYE returns twice a month, there’s increasing bitterness that business have been forced to become unpaid tax collectors. There’s been a strong call tonight from Opposition Leader Jim Bolger for his party to field more women candidates in the next election. Bolger told National Party Members in Auckland they had a responsibility to make sure there were more woman MPs. Speaker: Jim Bolger (Opposition Leader).

A Social Welfare decision to not pay a rest home benefit to people under 65 has been labelled harmless buck passing by rest home owners. The owners say mentally ill people are baring the brunt of the ruling as they are shunted between area health boards and Social Welfare, neither of which wants to pay for their accommodation. The Fiji Government has banned foreign journalists from covering the funeral of deposed Prime Minister Dr Timoci Bavadra. TVNZ and four major Australian news organisations have been refused visas without explanation.
