Brothers Danny and Peter Bennett own Waipopo Orchard near Timaru, they say South Canterbury apples take longer to ripen and are often smaller than those from more traditional growing regions like Hawke's Bay or Nelson, cooler summers make the fruit mature more slowly meaning they're crisper and riper, the brothers are currently working on a venture to supply a new apple variety, Honey Crisp, to the American market.
