1960s

Early music video gems from New Zealand's Swinging Sixties.

Ray Columbus and the Invaders, “Till We Kissed”

Shining brightly for a few short years, Ray Columbus and the Invaders ruled the music charts in both New Zealand and Australia. One of their biggest hits, “Till We Kissed” was inspired by the style of the Righteous Brothers. This recording captures the style of many early music videos – filmed in a studio with the band performing direct to camera. They were the first New Zealand act to have a No. 1 single overseas (in Australia).

The Avengers, “Love Hate Revenge”

Straight out of Wellington, The Avengers were assembled by entrepreneur Ken Cooper and aimed to have maximum appeal as teenage idols. Directed by pioneering television producer Christopher Bourn, this video features the band goofing around at Oriental Bay like The Monkees mixed with some boy band closeups.
