Poem Inspired by Wellington's Wind
18 Oct 2013
Our team has come across this poetic ode to Wellington’s gusty weather, by a returned WWII soldier.
“I’m content to be holding my lid on / at the corner of Lambton Quay / as I cling to the earth with my eyebrows / against the wind that is shoving at me”.
This poem was written by an unknown returned World War II soldier and is recited by radio announcer William Yates at a 2YA concert of camp entertainers, which was broadcast to New Zealand forces in the Pacific, in the early 1940s.
