Investiture Speech by Governor-General Galway

Commentator Charles Bennett describes the scene at Tūrangawaewae Marae as Princess Te Puea approaches the Governor-General to be made a Commander of the Highest Order of the British Empire, (CBE) for her services to Māori.  

The Governor-General Sir George Galway delivers the citation and speech which is translated into Māori by Hemana Pōkiha. 

Te Puea is led forward by Hemana Pōkiha and Waimarama Pūhara, and is greeted with a karanga.

Te Puea Hērangi receives the CBE

The Royal Warrant from King George VI is read by Governor-General Sir George Galway. He then presents the CBE decoration to Te Puea Hērangi. 

The presentation of the award is greeted by a karanga, cheering and the famous haka Ka mate, Ka mate!

Te Puea speaks briefly but her words are lost in the cheering. Te Puea wears the CBE medal in the image above.

"E noho e Rata" by Te Pou o Mangatāwhiri

In English, commentator Charles Bennett describes the scene as Te Pou o Mangatāwhiri perform to celebrate the investiture of Te Puea Hērangi with the CBE. They sing the poi E noho e Te Rata, composed by Te Puea Herāngi and accompanied by a mandolin, which is believed to be played by her husband, Tūmōkai Katipa.

Bennett describes how a young boy comes forward in a mock challenge to the Governor-General Sir George Galway. Sir Apirana Ngata then moves forward, takes the young boy by the hand and escorts him to the porch of Mahinārangi where he is introduced to Galway.

Speech and Haka by Sir Apirana Ngata

Sir Apirana Ngata (standing far left in the image) speaks in English immediately after the investiture of Te Puea Hērangi with the CBE (Te Puea stands on the right in the image).  

He pays tribute to the role played by Te Pou o Mangatāwhiri in raising funds to build both Mahinārangi wharenui and Tūrongo whare at Tūrangawaewae. His speech is supported by the haka Ka mate, Ka mate!

Haka and Waiata by Te Pou o Mangatāwhiri

Commentator Charles Bennett describes the scene as Te Pou o Mangatāwhiri, the group that helped Te Puea to raise the funds for the building of Turangawaewae Marae, perform in celebration of the investiture of her CBE. They perform the haka E ringaringa i pākia and Ka mate, Ka mate! which is followed by an unidentified waiata.
